PALLET RACK DECKING

The following lists common ways of decking pallet rack.

NO DECKING NO DECKING

Sometimes, a company will not deck over pallet rack or use pallet supports, but will use the pallets as their own supports.  Due to a high possibility of slippage, this is generally not recommended, especially where the pallets are high off the ground.

WOOD (2 X    MATERIAL)

                                                                                                        2 X  WOOD DECKING

It is generally a good idea to at least place ( 2) 2x6" boards under each pallet.  Any 2x material can be used, but 2x4s can twist and fall through and 2x6s are minimally acceptable.  Safety is increased if a pallet is broken and/or weak, if a pallet is smaller than a normal pallet, and if a fork lift operator is inattentive.  It also allows the pallet to be slid into place.

COST:  GOING RATE OF 2X MATERIAL

WOOD (2 X    MATERIAL) OVERLAID WITH PARTICLEBOARD, PLYWOOD, OR OTHER SURFACE

                                                                                                         2 X  WITH OVERLAY

Same as above, except a completely flat surface such as particleboard or plywood is laid over and secured to the 2x material.  This is useful when product is not necessarily always on a pallet.

COST:  GOING RATE OF 2X  AND OVERLAY MATERIAL

STEEL DECK SUPPORTS with or without overlay

The items shown at left are basically metal deck supports.  The one on the top is placed inside the beam steps and is very similar to a 2x4, except is is only 2-1/2" wide.  These have the possibility of twisting and falling through, and are used more commonly when a solid steel deck is laid over the top.  The one on the bottom has extra safety flanges which make it considerably more difficult for them to twist and fall through.  The flanges go over the top of the beam and are visible from the front of the rack.

COST:

42" standard, but many depths available.

With or without safety flanges - please call or e-mail for current pricing.

Overlay:  going rate for particleboard, plywood, steel, etc.

                                                                                                WIRE DECKING

Wire decking is a wire grid, usually a 2x4" grid made of 4-ga. (approx. 1/4" diameter) wire and supported underneath with (welded on) steel ribs.  The steel ribs sit inside the beam steps similar to a 2x or steel deck support above.  The most common style of wire decking has a "waterfall" front and back, where the grid wraps over the front and back beams (see drawing).  Other types are flush fit (deck sits inside the steps and below the top of the beams) and flared (for box beams without steps).  Wire decking is clean and neat, very quick and easy to install, improves visibility for upper shelves, and is useful for operations where fire mitigation systems are in use.

COST:  42"D x 46"W w/ waterfall and three welded support ribs, 2500#/panel capacity:  $ 29.00 each

Other sizes and capacities are available.

                                                                                     CORRUGATED STEEL DECKING

Corrugated steel decking has limited application.  It provides a very heavy duty surface for standard pallet rack.  Another common use is for carpet racks, where 12'L panels are placed over two sets of rack.  They can help slow fires in situations where sprinkler systems are not being used.  Available in solid or perforated.

COST:

Generally about 25 - 50% more than wire decking.
